|President Matt Fischer (Left)|
I am sorry it has taken me so long to get an update from the team. With school, work, and rowing it is just nice to breathe sometimes. For those of you who don't know me I am Matthew Fischer and I am currently the President of the Murray State Rowing Team. I am from Evansville, IN and have been on the team now for 2 and a half years. I am a pre-physical therapy major with intentions on going to doctoral school.
So enough about myself because Murray State Rowing has had another successful season. Thanks to the big recruitment class we had last year we were able to once again get another big novice group again this year. 40 new rowers were given the oppritunity to represent the Murray State Rowing Team. This gave us a total of 74 overall members for the fall semester which I think may be the biggest group we've ever had.
Once again the team competed at the 2nd annual Dragon Boat Festival in Paducah, KY and once again were crowned victors of the race. This was just the start to an awesome fall semester. The first race we went to was the Chattanooga Head Race. Unfortunately the novice were not able to compete at this race due to restricted practice time on the water. We ended up getting 3 medals at the race. Secret city was next and it was our best race. It was a bit foggy and windy but ended up taking 10 medals back home. Next was the big race of the year, Head of the Hooch. We had many boats place in the top ten. The big win for the day was the WV8 placing second place by less than a second.
Throughout the season the team once again fundraised by working concession stands and various other events. Also thanks to some alumni's donations, were able to get some much needed equipment and able to renovate our "Erg Room". The team has been working diligently on strength and conditioning thanks to Sarah Marshall (our new assistant coach). Not also has the team been working hard on the water but also in Waterfield (library). We are currently trying to compile everyone's fall GPA and get an average for this past season as well. This is something that I feel very strongly about and hope it is something that we can "brag" about because we have some really smart cookies on this team.
We are all looking forward to the spring season now and will have our first 2k showing in early February at Chattanooga indoors. This will be a good indication of how hard we have worked in the off season and will continue to work on through winter break. Another fun thing we have planned for the spring is the Racer Rowing Cardboard Regatta. This will be a fundraiser event put on by the team in which teams will build boats out of cardboard and race them in a pool. Not sure where we are going to do it yet. This will be our big fundrasier for the semseter and plan to have it in the early spring.
I think that is all for now the team thanks you guys for your support and encouragement, and we will let you know how indoors goes. Thank you and Happy Holidays everyone!
