Sprint Season Starts with Vanderbilt Showdown

Racer Rowing emerged from the William McLean Erg Room after a month of intense winter training to kick off the 2014 spring sprint season at the Indoor Rowing Championship in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In a hard-fought contest, Murray State lost the Team Points Trophy to Vanderbilt. However with a second-place overall finish, and a trove of awards totaling 23 medals, the stage is set for some exciting races on the water against our Nashville rivals later this spring.
Looking back on this year's Indoor Championship, club president Matt Fisher writes:
We have shown what we are capable of doing.  We had many rowers finish in the top five and dozens finish in the top ten. One race I was particularly proud of was our Team Relay.  We had a squad of seven novice rowers and just one varsity compete against other teams that stacked their squads with the best of their varsity members. This year’s novice rowers are really performing at a competitive level!

Another race that I am particularly proud of is the Men’s and Women’s Coxswain 500m. Our coxswains dominated in this event. As a rower, it means a lot to know that our forward-facing teammates are up to the task of chasing own a hard fought win.

Although we did not bring back the Team Points Trophy, we started the season with good indicators of where we stand and what we need to improve on as we look to the future. Our team had an excellent showing and I am truly excited to see what happens when we get out on the water.

  1. Its a sad day when Big Papa Lavit isn't around to dominate the Dirty 30. Had he been there, surely MSU would have brought home 24 medals.

  3. I'm making a comeback in the Dirty 30 next year! I'd love it if others from the Racer Rowing Society joined me.
By the way, I need to brag on the team. I've been keeping track of our erg scores from Tennessee Indoors since we began going there in 1997. I have them in rank order by time. We have five new scores in the Women's top 20 of all time! Proof that we're getting faster: only two of the time scores in the top ten are older than 2011. Also, team President, Matt Fischer, is currently tied for fourth place all-time. Congratulations to all!
If I can get some time, I'll post the all-time scores from the Tennessee Indoor Championships. We still have a lot of old-school representation, but these kids are getting faster!

  4. To quote Talladega Nights: "I wanna go fast!"...and "If you're not first, you're last."
